Her: “Do you know my name?”
Me: “Erika”
She showed me the cake. It had “70!” and “Arnulf” written on it.
My baddddddd.
After an hour long breakfast, in which I understood about 30% of the words, but about 5% of the actual conversation, M, her nephew, and I went to Nürnberg.
Yup, the site of the trials. Also the home of a delicious Christmas cookie type thing, called Lebkuchen. Obviously they had that in the middle of July, so I bought one. Delicious. Tastes like gingerbread or something, only better.
I just find this funny.
It's the face that Emmy makes when she gets fed something she doesn't like.
Nürnberg is this beautiful town/city, with a really well preserved Middle-Ages part of the city. We went to the Nürnberger Burg (Nuremberg Castle), where some Burgraves and other important people used to hang out and whatnot. It’s absolutely stunning there. Apart from the clothes and whatnot, it still has that old city feel. Wandered into a couple of old churches, and whatnot. We were standing in the huge old city center at 12 noon, and so when the clock rang, little figurines started moving around on the old clock. Not very exciting, but I believe they were like 500 years old, so fairly impressive…
River flows right through it
Old old church + weekend market

Tried a piece of Nürnberger Lebkuchen at the market in front of that big church. It’s supposed to be a Christmas treat, so I was afraid that it was gonna be fruitcake. Instead, it’s this squishy gingerbread-y thing, with a thin wafer at the bottom. Delish! Also there were random people playing old party music (like middle ages party music…) (with about 5 too many piccolos there… I need my ears to hear thank you very much)
The view from the top of the Nürnberger Burg
The burg, like any good burg, was on the top of a hill. It's a lot steeper than it looks in the photo.
There was a wedding that had just ended around one of these old churches. What a perfect place to have it- in a middle ages cathedral, with stone pavement, and everything.
Second church, where the wedding had just taken place
Drove back to her sister’s house. We stopped at the German equivalent of a Home Depot, or Lowes… all home improvement stores smell the same always.
Had my first real “German” meal… These little potato dumplings with gravy, red cabbage, steak, and some very excellent red wine. It was the birthday meal, per the birthday boy’s request.
We took another walk at night with M, her sister, her cousin, and the dogs that night. Walked around farm fields, through the woods, with the dusk falling over Bavaria. Everything was so still.
